Five Fun And Flavorful Sodas You Can Make At Home This Summer

by Heidi Wheeler

It is easy to create some unique and tasty beverages with your own soda-maker or CO2 system this summer. These are a fresh and healthful alternative to the sugary syrups marketed for soda-making, and they cost only pennies per glass! These all start with the same, simple carbonated water, which is the foundation for any marketed or homemade soda pop.

Five fantastic and fizzy drinks you can make include the following:

Infused seltzer

Sometimes the simplest sodas quench your thirst the best; try carbonating plain tap-water and adding fresh mint, citrus, and cucumber slices while you chill it in the fridge. These are not only refreshing, but they can provide some valuable nutrients when you infuse them with fresh herbs, fruits, and even vegetables.

Peppermint ice

For a cold, crisp blast of mint, try adding a drop or two of peppermint extract to your carbonated water. If you prefer, you can add fresh mint and a teaspoon or two of simple syrup to your water. To make simple syrup, simply heat equal amounts of water and sugar on the stove until it becomes well-blended.

Berry blast

For a fruity drink that kids will love, add a spoon or two of frozen berry-juice concentrate to your carbonated water. Add a handful of fresh or frozen blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries. Better yet, freeze fresh berries with water in an ice-cube tray to use in your berry beverage this summer!

Apple refresher

This apple-flavored soda combines carbonated water and a couple tablespoons of frozen apple juice concentrate. Mix to dissolve, and add an apple slice and ice if you wish. This is not only thirst-quenching, but gives you a healthy jolt from the nutrients in the apple juice.

Liquid lemons

If you want a slightly more sour and sparkling alternative to lemonade, try adding a drop or two of lemon extract to your carbonated water. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, or a couple of lemon wedges for extra pucker-power. This is especially delicious on a hot day, or when combined with vodka for an adults-only liquid refreshment.

The savings can add up quickly when you make your own system using your soda-maker and CO2 refills. This also opens the door to trying lots of unique and unconventional flavors, each beginning simply with low-cost carbonated water. Try making your own sodas this summer, and save some money while you enjoy homemade liquid refreshment.
