Having A Conference? Make Sure You Have The Right Microphone

by Heidi Wheeler

If you are holding an event in your conference center, you should make sure you are using the right type of microphone. Your attendees need to hear every word you say, and this will ensure that they do. Below are some features that you need to look for in a microphone.

Voice Projection

There is a lot of noise going on in a conference room during meetings, such as people rustling their papers, chairs moving, dropping pens, projector fans, and even your HVAC unit running. For this reason, you need to have a good microphone that will project your voice over all this noise.

Wireless Clip

Some microphones also come with a wireless clip that you can wear that will ensure you can walk around the room and be heard. These clips are usually very small and you can hide them under your jacket. This allows you to walk around without having to worry about holding a microphone in your hand.

Distance

Make sure the microphone will work at a long distance. This is especially true if you have a large conference room. The people in the back should be able to hear you as well as the people sitting right in front of you.

Directionality

Directionality is the microphone's sensitivity to sound from different directions. For example, some microphones will pick up sounds from one direction, while others pick up sounds all around you equally. You should use a microphone that blocks out some of the sound on the sides of you. There could be sound coming from the room next door, or there may be people talking outside of the conference room door. This noise can distract you from what you are trying to say to your attendees.

Ceiling Microphone

They also make microphones that you install on your ceiling. If you purchase this type, make sure it is strong enough that people can hear you even if you have your head down looking at some papers, or your head is turned in a different direction than the microphone.

When you start shopping for a new microphone, ask the salesperson if you can try them out before you purchase one. Make sure you ask a lot of questions, including making sure the microphones have the features listed above. You should also think about the size of the microphone. This will allow you to purchase the best microphone for your meeting.
