Reasons To Have Your Wedding Reception At A University

by Heidi Wheeler

During the summer months when students aren't in school, many universities rent out space to people who are holding different events. If you're planning a summertime wedding and need an indoor reception venue, a university can be a good choice. You'll have your choice of spaces, many of which can be fancier than you might expect. There will also be plenty of parking available for your guests, and the on-site cafeteria can be perfect for your catering service. Here are some reasons that you may want to book your wedding reception at a university.

Sentimentality

If you or your soon-to-be spouse attended the university — and, ideally, if you met each other there and began dating as students — there's obviously a huge sentimental incentive to choosing this type of reception venue. It can be exciting for you to return to this space, especially if you haven't visited since graduation, and walk through some of the areas in which you spent time together back when you were students. There's a good chance that many of your wedding guests will be university friends, so they'll also appreciate the sentimentality of this venue choice.

Good Photo Opportunities

A university presents you with an endless list of good photo opportunities that you can discuss with your wedding photographer. Virtually every university has some historic buildings, so photos inside of these spaces can be impactful. If you and your significant other were student-athletes, another option is to get some photos taken in one of the athletics buildings — for example, on the volleyball court where each of you spent countless hours practicing and playing. You can even get creative and have some fun with your photos, perhaps gathering your entire wedding party and having everyone sit in the banked seats of an auditorium for some photos.

A Unique Environment

A big bonus of choosing this wedding venue for your reception is the unique quality that it offers you and your guests. People often remember weddings that are unique, and there's a good chance that many of those in attendance won't have ever been to a university wedding reception. People will have fun walking the halls and peeking into the classroom doors. You may even wish to arrange a post-reception gathering at one of the campus pubs, which can offer you a chance to toast your guests and thank them for showing up to support you on your special day.
